Here's a problem to stimulate the mind.  You have 12 identical looking pool chlorine tablets.  All, but one, are exactly the same weight.  The different tablet can be either heavier or lighter than the other 11 tablets.  Using a double pan scale, you have just 3 weighings to determine which tablet is different and whether it is heavier or lighter.  The solution must work in all possible cases.  This problem does have a real solution.  To solve the problem you don't really need tablets or a scale - just reason it out!  Editor's note:  7/19/2006

Celsius to Fahrenheit.  You've seen the formulas for conversion.  But you don't always have a pad and paper handy:  let alone a calculator.  Here's an easy way to convert these values.  From ºC to ºF:  double the ºC, subtract 10%, add 32 and now you have ºF.  Example:  30ºC times 2 = 60, minus 10% (-6) = 54, add 32 and you get 86ºF.  From ºF to ºC:  subtract 32, divide in half, add 10% and now you have ºC.  Example:  92ºF minus 32 = 60, divide in half = 30, add 10% (3) and you get 33 ºC.  I've used this since my college days, but I have no recollection, as to where or how I came upon this technique.  Editor's note: 7/19/2006
